If you could build a country from the ground up, knowing everything we know today, what would you keep—and what would you refuse to repeat?
No inherited bureaucracy. No institution protected simply because “that's how we've always done it.” No assumption that the systems we were born into are the only systems possible.
Just a blank page and a fundamental question:
What should a country actually exist to do for its people?
My Nation is Kevin Barcelon Jr.'s civic-design thought experiment: an attempt to imagine a modern country from first principles rather than beginning with an existing political system and arguing over how to repair it.
The book explores the difficult questions that appear the moment the blank page becomes real. Who should have power? How should that power be limited? What does government owe its citizens—and what do citizens owe one another? How should institutions be held accountable? What happens when a system fails? And how do you design a country capable of recognizing its mistakes and changing course?
Rather than imagining a perfect society, My Nation asks how we might design one that can learn.
A country where institutions serve a purpose rather than perpetuate themselves. Where authority has boundaries. Where accountability is built into the structure. Where investment in people is treated as part of building a stronger society. And where admitting that something isn't working is the beginning of improvement rather than a political defeat.
This isn't a prediction of the future or a claim to have discovered the perfect form of government.
It's an invitation to remove the walls for a moment and look at the foundation.
If we weren't required to start with the country we already have...
What kind of country would we choose to build?
